Washington Seminar Newsletter

In this issue there are four brilliant spotlights from former interns who share what their Washington Seminar experience has done for them.

I made a promise to myself as I sat on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on the last day of my Washington Seminar experience — that no matter what happened when I went back to BYU that I would return to D.C. after graduation. I kept that promise to myself and it changed my life.

I went to college with the plan of becoming a doctor… and I was fortunate to secure a spot in the Washington Seminar program interning for Senator Reid.  As I became more familiar with the serious policy issues facing our country, I became less interested in medicine and more interested in public policy… As I stare out my office window at a stunning view of the U.S. Capitol at sunset, I can’t help but wonder what my office window view would have been had I not participated in the Washington Seminar program.

This country is at an important crossroads in its existence. The United States faces many pressing issues including the Iraq War, the war on terrorism, an unstable economy, high health care costs, entitlement program deficits, and a broken immigration system. Thanks in part to the Washington Seminar program, I am trying in some small way to be a part of that battle throughout my life

The Washington Seminar experience has not only exceeded my expectations of the experiences that I would have during my internship, but it has also brought to light a whole new perspective of how powerful an influence one can present to the world if that individual aligns his or her life to serve others.
